FEATURED PROJECT

PROJECT TYPE

Illustration, storytelling, book, graphic novel

ABOUT PROJECT

The graphic novel is part of the project “Post-Socialist Britain? Memory, Representation, and Political Identity Amongst German, Polish, and Ukrainian Immigrants in the UK”. This initiative investigates the ways migration influences the interplay between collective memory and political identity. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project seeks to deepen understanding of these dynamics. The initiative is led by Professor Sara Jones at the University of Birmingham.

Titled "Unfamiliar", the book focuses on the experiences of Polish migrants in the UK. Divided into eight chapters, it explores various aspects of their lives, shedding light on the challenges they face and the journeys they undertake. The aim is to foster empathy and a deeper understanding of the diverse narratives of migrants worldwide.

The graphic novel’s illustrations draw heavily from photographs produced by participants in the Central European Photography Club. This club was established through a series of workshops held in West Bromwich and Hyson Green as part of the broader project, providing a rich visual and emotional foundation for the book’s storytelling.
